I met someone for a coffee today. We met at an event about a month ago thought we'd like to get to know each other better. I discovered during our time together today that her husband had cancer and was receiving chemotherapy around the same time that I was.
He passed away eight weeks after being diagnosed.
In August, I will be officially cancer-free for five years.
Two similar experiences with two vastly different outcomes. Granted, the type of cancer was different. But cancer is still cancer, no matter how 'mild' it is.
It is difficult to express the emotions I felt listening to her share about her husband, but I'm going to try.
It was a strange mixture of overwhelming gratitude, joy, and heartbreak.
Gratitude because I'm still here. I'm so blessed to have been gifted more time with my loved ones here on earth.
Joy because she lit up talking about her husband. Her love for him shone so brightly, and she exuded joy as she told me that they were gifted those eight weeks between his diagnosis and his death to say goodbye. She said that not everyone gets the opportunity to do that, and that she is so grateful they got to spend that quality time together.
Heartbreak because hearing all about their experience broke my heart. It's not fair that I recovered and he didn't. It's not fair for me to get more time and for him to not. It's not fair that she's all alone now.
IT'S NOT FAIR.
But then I remembered something I heard a pastor say a while back. He was asked why some healing miracles take place and why some do not. His answer, "God's will is not always done. Not yet."
I don't know why I was healed and he wasn't. I don't know why some miracles happen and why some don't.
But I know that God is good. This may not have been His will, but He can use it for good somehow. In the meantime, we will continue to pray that His will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and continue to hang on to the hope of THAT day.
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
